Using Good Hermeneutics

Good Hermeneutics

After reading through Romans we make as many observations as we can in order to fully grasp our passage. With knowing the context of Romans and noting all observations, they can help us understand the particular issues in our passage.

Observations

Romans 15:14-33 parallels our passage. These two sections act as "book ends" to the letter and help us understand the main thrust of the letter.

Paul is establishing a rapport with the Roman Church in our passage since he did not plant this church and does not necessarily know the members of the church. We see this in the following observations;

  • (v8) Compliments them on their reputation
  • (v9) Expresses his unceasing prayer for them
  • (v10) Communicates his desire to visit them.
  • (v11) Paul wants to visit so that he may impart a gift of spiritual nature
  • (v12) Paul notes that the mutual expressions of their faith will encourage one another, his spiritual gift to them and their fruit in return.
  • (v13) Paul communicates a second time that he wishes to visit them.
